In developed countries, the organic product category has shown steady growth over the past decade. And mushroom growers do not stand aside from this process – for example, in the USA, about 30 percent of mushroom growers have already received organic certificates
In many large supermarkets in Ukraine today you can find departments with organic products, in particular vegetables and fruits. The cost of growing organic products is usually higher, but you can sell it for a much higher price – the difference between the price of a conventional product and an organic one is usually from 30% to 100% of the price of an inorganic product
In the framework of the seminar “Marketing and sales of mushrooms”, which will be held by the Umdis news agency on February 27, 2013 at the exhibition Greenhouse, we decided to touch on this topic, because the appearance of organically certified mushrooms on the Ukrainian market is only a matter of time. Anticipating the presentation of the director of Organic Standard LLC Sergey Galashevsky at the seminar, we asked him several questions regarding the possibility of producing and selling organic mushrooms in Ukraine.
Is the Ukrainian buyer ready to buy organic products at higher prices?
Of course, not all consumers are willing to overpay, but in general there are more and more of them. In addition, an objective understanding comes that they do not overpay, but pay an adequate price, given that the cost of production is also increasing.
A quality and niche product cannot be cheap.
Are there any mushroom producers in Ukraine that have already completed the certification procedure or are currently undergoing it?
There are none, there are only those who were interested in this area of production.
What are the main requirements that the mushroom producer will need to fulfill in order to qualify for an organic certificate?
There are many requirements, but as regards the organic production of mushrooms, it is that, in accordance with EU Regulation 834/2007 (EU organic standards), substrates for the production of mushrooms must consist of components that have an organic status, or if they are absent, traditional ones should not exceed 25% of the total mass of the components of the substrate.
How long does certification take, what are its stages?
The lines of certification directly depend on the willingness of the manufacturer and his desire to promote and provide the necessary information, as well as introduce changes in accordance with the requirements. Usually it is from one month to six months.
Which certification companies in Ukraine can interested manufacturers contact?
There are 13 accredited and approved EU certification bodies in Ukraine. Of these, the Ukrainian authority is only one – Organic Standard.
